In addition to providing and practicing a series of integrated medicinal techniques that encourage realignment of the body, we aim to educate our patients about using natural supplements that have an active and responsive role in maintaining overall health.
In particular, we often find ourselves focusing on one.
Generally speaking, our bodies are able to self produce most of the healthy fats that it needs. One exception is Omega-3, which is an essential fat, meaning that it must be synthesized from food or supplemental means.
Omega-3s are an integral part of the health and cell membranes throughout the body, ensuring that the receptors within them are properly functioning. They aid in the generation of hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction, and inflammation They also bind to receptors in cells that regulate genetic function. Omega-3 fats have been shown to help prevent heart disease and stroke, may help control lupus, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis, and may play protective roles in cancer and other conditions.
Some of the best omega-3 supplements include:
Natural Fish Oil:
Natural fish oil is derived from the oily tissue of fish and contains several critical nutrients for optimal bodily health
Additionally, natural fish oil is rich in both vitamin D and vitamin A
Salmon, sardines, herring, menhaden and cod liver are among the most common sources of natural fish oil and offer the best fish oil supplement.
Fish oils come in both liquid and capsule forms
Krill oil is made from Antarctic krill, a small shrimp-like animal that is a good source of omega-3s. A range of different studies indicate that krill oil may be an even better source of omega-3 than many fish oils. Even better, krill oil is highly resistant to oxidation, as it naturally contains a potent antioxidant called astaxanthin
Finally, because krill are small and live only a short duration, they are unable to accumulate large amounts of contaminants in their lifetime, making their oil pure from the start.
Marine algae, particularly microalgae, are another source of EPA and DHA. In fact, EPA and DHA actually originates in algae, which is consumed by fish. In this respect, it’s thought that algal oil contains even higher concentrations of omega-3 than fish oil alone, making it a potentially better source for the best omega-3 supplement
Algal oil is considered to be environmentally friendly and doesn’t contain heavy metals. It is a great alternative to fish oil for those following vegan or vegetarian diets.
